[dbki] @ dialogos demo party, held in jena/germany
11/04 - hi folks, back from the dialogos now, some hours of sleep and now i'm working on a quick and ugly report page.
first i will say thank you to the organizers, to all the voters, to newtek for lightwave ;-) and all the other things they are linked with these circumstances. it was really a good party, all features are great, the cinema and the place. a small drop of bitterness was the time table for us. to put the finish line at 0.00 am on saturday didn't give us the 'done at the party' feeling. but i can understand why this deadline is placed on this time.
11/05 - ok, next version of party report. sorry for adding my personal stuff first, but there are so many request for more details.
the location - the party was held in the same location like last year. in the holzmarktpassage in jena. this is a great location in the middle of the town. some shops are in the shoping center and there are many more around this center. there are also different food provider like the big m and a italian restaurant. nice thing, the shops were opened on sunday too. the room for the party is good. i'm not very happy about the wall between the two main rooms but nobody can change this ;-). during the daytime it was a little bit too lighten in the first room, not the best situation for graphican or cheap notebook displays. the chilling area is very cool, relaxing on some very comfortable sofas, drinking some afri cola or other drinks (i havent test it all) while listening to some music really rocks. the big parking lot in the center is also very nice, no parking problems and a nice big cargo lift.
the compos - like the last year we have watched the compos, except the music compos, in the cinema, located in the shopping center. the quality was nice, the seats are very soft, some guys fell asleep ;-). we have noticed some sound problems during the demo compos but they disappear later after some fine tuning. i don't want to say more about the entries, coz i'm not a demo coder and i'm a little bit bored of 3d scene players. the 'de profundis' demo was impressive because i think it was a good concept and nice models. maybe some story would be good, this can make such things more interesting (i remeber the 'le petit prince') the graphic compos have shown are very wide spectrum of styles, i think the ixus is great, a little bit better enviroment reflections would be good. the trees, hm, great work on the leaves but there seems to be something wrong with the shadows on the ground. the computer room, nice work on the models but maybe too much 'cheap' light effects. the pixel compo is impressive for me on every party, coz i'm generally unable to create stuff like this ;-).
more coming tomorrow, terrible headache
summary - great party at all. a small problem is the overall time. 2 days are not very long and with the demo deadline on sunday night, most of the people don't have much time for chating or irl talks. good admins and nice girls too ;-). we will back next year.
11/07 - i add some minor updates to the report and a new test render to the whatisreal section. there are some whispers about wrong or too fuzzy shadows under the car. maybe they are right, we work on it ;-)
11/09 - i have added a small version of our hdr we have used for the 'whatisreal' scene under whatisreal. just get it and try it. u will need the image world and the radiance plugins for lw too. these plugins are normally shipped with your lw.
warning, my personal stuff is coming now ;-)
i'm proud to say that we have reached first place at the 'visual design' compo and the second place at the 'raytraced compo'. get the complete result list here results and get the entries here (warning, the visual design entry is around 10 mb and the raytraced entry is around 1.7 mb).
raytrace - abalone
visual design - whatisreal
here the pics in small resolution of 800x600

some notes to the releases. the raytraced one is a subpatched model of an abalone board. i wanted to create an realistical board with the possibility to zoom on every detail. we have used a self created hdr image for the lightning and the plugin x-dof for the dof effect. render time is around 3 hours, depending on the lag of time befor the party we have disabled the real reflections, so you can't see the balls within a ball :-(. we will fix this and post the new image here.
the 'visual design' entry is a composited photo. we had this idea on thursday and we have been very suprised finishing this project in only one day (except the car) because we have never used this technology befor. we have shot the vaio® with a canon powershot g2 in raw modus, converted the picture to a 16 bit (48 bit) tiff. we have taken the screenshot and pasted this into the photo with an overlay amount of 15% to get better colors. the car is complete modeled with lightwave 7 as a subpatched model. (sure, i like this kind of models ;-)) just a note to the car, this is a small flywheel toy and does really exists, but please believe us we have modeled this car ;-). we add extra polygonal objects for the textures, the textures himself are also taken with the canon. then we have take a line of shots of a silver ball on the vaio to catch the lightning and created a hdr image with gimp, pan tools and radiance tools. after this i have modeled some keys of the vaio. we need this to create the shadows of the car for the compositing. because of the missing export of radiosity shadow buffers we have rendered this picture with the car, without the car but with shadow and last but not least the keyboard without car and without shadow (thanx 2 #lightwavers for helping me). we substracted the pic without shadow from the pic with shadow and get the shadow himself. the camera position was taken from the real cam :-).
here some additional pics of the car as wireframe wireframecar and here some other 3d images from us 3d-objects
an amount of over 100 photos were shot at the party, i will post here some quick converted raws, if i found some time i will convert them with correct white balance and without autolevels ;-).
